Big Toys 40k - What is it?

Some of you may know me from my other blog, and if so you may know that I love the super heavy machines and creatures of the 40k battlefield. You may also know that I have a large collection of figures, of most armies, and that I love adding unusual and/or custom pieces to my collection, and that I love battles with great scenery, theme and a story to tell. You're probably also aware that events that cater to these whims are few and far between because of the following reasons:

  • Superheavies are expensive to purchase
  • Room to store titans is limited
  • Big battles take too long to play
  • Big battles have too much downtime between turns, or you are rushed.
  • Tables are too small
  • Standard 40k setup is a boxing match setup - face each other and punch
  • Some units are broken and there's always TFG who spams them
  • Custom stuff is never accepted by a group of strangers, in case it's not balanced
  • Battles don't have theme or story when it's just a meat grinder
  • Scenery is scaled for infantry, not titans

So to work around these, we'll be looking to do the following:

  • Share some of the superheavies we have amongst the teams with prior planning
  • Make use of faction helpers - players who just help control armies, but don't bring their own
  • Use a ruleset which minimizes downtime (tweaked 2019 Apocalypse)
  • Have innovative, but accessible table setups (no boxing rings)
  • Run on an invitational basis
  • Use the Apocalypse units, plus those from Fundapocalypse, with a selection of Big Toys 40k's own ones
  • Story will be an integral part of these games, deployments and reserves will allow the battle to unfold rather than all be over in 2 turns of shooting. We're also looking at ways to record the battle to share it with those not at the event as a visual story
  • We'll be looking to improve our terrain to stop titans seeing and shooting all - but that may take a little longer unless we can enlist some help - let's see

Currently we're looking at running 1-2 events a year, and we're already looking at a venue for our first, pencilled in for the last weekend in May 2023.

That's the details - more to follow as work is done!

  1. All sounds good. I like the way it all sounds. And have reverted to 5Ed some years ago.

    1. 5th was a great edition, I think with a few tweaks to vehicles, it'd have been close to perfect.
